The Glasgow WorkingTo celebrate the opening of Objections to an Empty Mind at The Hidden Noise gallery Strange Attractor presents a night of talk, music and film. Phil Baker, author of Austin Osman Spare: The Life and Legend of London's Lost Artist, presents an illustrated talk about the artist and his work. Magick Concrète : a mediumistic improvisation for phonomantium and guitar, featuring Mark Pilkington (Strange Attractor) and Drew Mulholland (Mount Vernon Arts Lab). The London Nobody Knows (1969, 60 minutes): James Mason presents a wry view of unseen London, based on the books of Geoffrey Fletcher - a psychogeographer's delight. Strange Attractor presents The Glasgow Working at The Old Hairdressers on February 15. For more information go here Objections to an Empty Mind - Austin Osman Spare with Richard Brown The exhibition brings together a small yet potent selection of works by Spare from several private collections, and is curated to bring to the fore his exquisite draughtsmanship (often likened to Albrecht Dürer), and to highlight his interests in occult traditions, psychical phenomena, Eastern philosophy, wireless broadcasting and his own idiosyncratic theories about the unconscious. Works include obsessively- detailed phantoms and grotesques; symbolist and astral landscapes; automatic drawings; hallucinatory pastels; examples of Spare's anamorphic portraits (his 'experiments in relativity'), as well as more traditional, vivid self-portraits and portraits of local cockneys. Shown alongside Spare's works will be Richard Brown's 'Electro-chemical Glass', 1997, a time-based work using non-digital media comprising three disks of copper, aluminum and iron on a bed of liquid fertilizer, all encased in glass. Over fourteen years, through a series ongoing chemical interactions, the work is slowly unfolding and transforming, new shoots of iron and sheens of gold and lapis lazuli blue evoking ideas of alchemy, hyper-dimensionality and the magic of the real. Objections to an Empty Mind runs from February 17 - March 17 at Hidden Noise, 1/1, 24 Hayburn Crescent, Glasgow, G11 5AY. For more information go to www.thehiddennoise.info
A Psychocinematic Ritual: OV, The Psychogeographical Commission and The Wyrding ModuleA celebration of ritual, the occult, and the disturbing power of music and cinema. After their spectacular warm up for Italian horror score legends Goblin at last year's festival, occult project OV returns for a much-anticipated live experience, using ritual, coincidence, numerology and a hefty dose of magick to explore both the beauty and cruelty of war. The unsettling collaboration between members of Desalvo, Unwinding Hours and Sons and Daughters, the project was borne from a mutual fascination with the occult and the magical use of visuals. Using live film soundtracks alongside intriguing visuals, prepare to be reminded of the power of music and cinema to shock and disturb. The Wyrding Module is a solo project from paramusician Christopher Gladwin, one half of " Team Doyobi ". The psychotronic sounds of the The Wyrding Module are inspired by kosmische musik, mantra-rock, post-industrial ambience and the occult. The Psychogeographical Commission have released the albums Genius Loci and Patient Zero and the mini CD Widdershins. Their music combines psychogeography and magick with sonic experimentation. The Psychogeographical Commission have featured heavily in the pages of compulsiononline. This event marks the debut live performance of The Psychogeographical Commission. A Psychocinematic Ritual takes place at The Old Hairdressers, Glasgow on February 23. Don't miss it. Mark Stewart makes an apocalyptic return amidst an increasingly agitated atmosphere. 'Nothing Is Sacred' is a damning indictment of greed in a year riddled by riots, revolutions, occupations and increasing collapse of the global financial system. 'Nothing Is Sacred' features a collaboration with Crass vocalist Eve Libertine, German electro monsters Slope and Dan Catsis from the Pop Group on bass. 'Nothing Is Sacred''s howling funk-rock and unyielding political attack evolved from the sessions for Mark's forthcoming album. 'Nothing Is Sacred' originally appeared as the AA side of the now-deleted limited 7-inch cover of the T.Rex classic 'Children of the Revolution' issued as part of the Black Friday releases to celebrate independent record shops. 'Children of the Revolution' features a collaboration with The Bug. The single limited to 500 copies is available (if you can still find one) as a hand numbered, hand-worked sleeve constituting one unique piece of Mark's bombart. Othon's much-anticipated second album is finally here! Othon Mataragas is a genre-bending songwriter, a non-conformist composer and an eccentric pianist. He has collaborated on the soundtrack to the Bruce LaBruce film Otto; or Up With Dead People and a new live accompaniment to the Derek Jarman film The Angelic Conversation together with the father of industrial music Peter Christopherson (Throbbing Gristle, Coil). His music has been featured in comedy shows by David Hoyle, art exhibitions like 'Gay Icons' at the National Portrait Gallery and he has worked with musicians like Marc Almond, Current 93 and Laura Moody. For Impermanence, his new highly ambitious music venture, Othon's ongoing collaborator Ernesto Tomasini demonstrates his huge 4 octave range across many of its tracks: 'At Night', 'The Fall', '59', 'A Little Dream' and 'Impermanence'. Marc Almond, who also guests in the album, lends his voice to the darkest and most torturous moment on the record with his interpretation of the title track and his dramatic rendition of 'Last Night I Paid To Close My Eyes'. Camille O'Sullivan contributes with her passionate storytelling voice to 'A Trip to Paradise' and the songwriter himself sings on 'All Is Too Soon' a song dedicated to a childhood friend who recently died of a heroin overdose. Other guests include guitarist Justin Jones (And Also the Trees), vocalist Beverly Crome (The Cesarians) and the Elysian Quartet. Othon has done the album's lush arrangements and Troy Banarzi has produced the title track.Impermanence is an important landmark in Othon's artistic evolution. Inspired by a series of Tibetan Tantric meditations, it explores, in his words, "how our small world and everything that surrounds it may eventually be destroyed but, also, how Love can play a transformative role by giving birth to a young and naughty phoenix from the ashes of our old-world emotions". Stylistically, Impermanence is virtually indefinable - with 50s pop, death baroque, post-minimalist and sleazy folk references, Othon has given his album the genre of 'PAN muzik'; a new off-limits musical genre that includes all genres! An all-embracing and holistic style of music neither exclusively experimental nor pop, neither strictly progressive nor banal. Impermanence is out now on Cherry Red/ Strike Force Entertainment. Feasting With Panthers is a collaboration between Marc Almond and composer Michael Cashmore setting poems of Count Eric Stenbock plus unique translations by Poet Jeremy Reed, of poems by Jean Genet, Rimbaud, Paul Verlaine as well as Reeds own Poetry, to music. 'Decadent' poems of Thwarted love, Opiated romance, decadence and death woven with a Homo-eroticism accompanied by Michael Cashmore's haunting, melancholic music that gives the verse a feeling of yearning for beauty and a longing for lost innocence and youth.
The album was recorded over several years sending files by email and post, never once recording together in the studio, Berlin based Michael Cashmore working at home to compose the music, playing all of the instruments and adding Marcs vocals from files recorded in London. The result is a glorious union, both in voice and music, complementing the text.
The project began after Current 93's David Tibet gave Marc a book of Poems by the Baltic German Poet Count Stanislaus Eric Stenbock he had published through the Durtro label. Marc was instantly attracted to the dark erotic and melancholic yearning in the verse and contacted Michael Cashmore who he had previously worked with on Current 93's reading of Idumea. He felt Michael would have the right understanding of the verse with his intricate beautiful musical work. The project developed to include many of Marc's favourite Poems by some of his favourite 'outsider' Poets with a common ground.
Marc and Michael released a limited edition EP of Stenbocks Gabriel and The Lunatic Lover through Durtro Records and performed both songs at The Queen Elizabeth Hall in London with Current 93 in 2008.
